Dr Tessa Hinshaw

Hello, I'm Tessa. I grew up on the island of Guernsey and after 10 years in London now live in Devon with my family. I'm a mother of twin boys and love spending time together in nature.

I qualified as a Clinical Psychologist 10 years ago at Canterbury Christ Church University (Salomons) in Kent and continued working in the NHS until 2020. I have been lucky to work in a wide range of settings with both young people and adults with mental health difficulties. For 8 years, I have specialised in autism and ADHD assessments where I found my professional calling. I am trained and experienced in "Gold Standard" assessment tools and bring a wealth of professional and personal experience to my work.

My previous roles have included Neurodevelopmental Clinical Lead positions within the NHS and in the private sector, where I trained and supervised others carrying out autism and ADHD assessments across the lifespan.  I have worked solely in independent practice since 2023 and continue to enjoy strong links with colleagues, attending regular training and peer supervision. I am registered with the HCPC and my  professional values are of the highest integrity.

My approach to assessment

I offer a compassionate and non-judgmental space for the assessment process, and recognise subtle presentations of autism and ADHD. I honour the challenges of autism and ADHD whilst also celebrating the natural diversity of human brains. My hope is that the assessment process will be a therapeutic and validating experience regardless of the outcome, and that diagnosis can provide a meaningful step towards a fulfilling and rewarding life.

I offer assessments in person or via videoconferencing to suit individual preferences.
